Do you know what goes into costuming a CKDS show? Now that we’ve wrapped up Costume Measurement week, it’s important for us to consider and ask the following before the design process:

· Does each piece fit with the color palate of the show?

· Will they grow with dancers from now to April? (when we have our annual performance)

· Is the costume age appropriate?

· Will designers have enough time to design and create original costumes?

· Does it reflect the culture of our school?

· Is the costume not exploitive of our dancers?

· Can the costume be shipped in time?

· Are the costumes readily available?

· Will they arrive in time for possible alterations?

· Do we have enough storage space?

· Will we need to rent additional hanging racks?

·Is there enough tag space to write each dancer’s name in all of their costumes?

· Will we have enough time to make exchanges if needed?

· Do we like the fabric of the costume?

· Is the costume comfortable?

· Are the costumes appropriate for a group with a wide variety of sizes, heights, and complexions?

· Can the costume accommodate the range of movement in the piece?

· Will straps and underwear show?

· Will it be too warm under the stage lights?

· What is the sizing availability?

· Does it respect our feathered counterparts by being cruelty free? No feathers!

Battleground

IMG_5855.jpg

The energy in the studio was through the roof as dancers from Cynthia King Dance Studio stepped up to battle a crew from the Shorefront Y on Sunday, December 3. The event, presented by CKDS and the Kids Breaking League, featured one-on-one battles as well as the main event, and the crowd cheered on talented dancers from all over the city.

Our dancers showed off what they've been learning in the past few months in a hip hop/breaking class taught by Major King, and we're very proud of the confidence and good sportsmanship that Andre, Emmanuel, Harper, Jeremiah, Kayo, and Kieshawn displayed. Even though we didn't win the battle, our students learned a lot from their first event, and we can't wait to see how they continue to grow, both on and off the dance floor.

Congratulations to the Shorefront Y crew, and thanks to everyone who came out!

How Far Would You Go For Vegan Ballet Slippers?

ck and katrina fox.jpg

People often ask: "Do you sell Cynthia King Vegan Ballet Slippers at the studio, in addition to your online shop?" Yes, we do!

We meet a wide variety of compassionate dancers when they come to the studio for a pair of our slippers, but in the past week we've had quite a few visitors from all over the world. We welcomed dancers from nearby in Brooklyn who needed slippers for their high school dance auditions, but also people from as far away as China, Israel, and Australia.

The Australian was none other than Katrina Fox, who is pictured above with Ms. King. Ms. Fox is the inspiring journalist and media professional behind Vegan Business Media and author of Vegan Ventures, as well as many other works. Ms. King has appeared on her podcast, and they've known each other "virtually" for years, but this was the first time they had an opportunity to meet in person. Thanks for visiting, Ms. Fox!

If you'd like to stop by the studio at 21 Snyder Avenue for a pair of ballet slippers, please call us at 718-521-4043 for our hours. We look forward to meeting you, wherever you're coming from!
